I've been maintaining this blog (for better or for worse) over the last eight years. Over these years, its natural evolution has led it into becoming something of a niche place for discussion of music in general and Qawwali in particular. Rather than trying to return my existing blog to its pre-Qawwali eclectic roots, I decided I’d start anew on Tumblr. So if you’re interested in music, Qawwali and subcontinental culture, keep reading/listening/watching/commenting here. For all of the above and everything else under the sun, head on over to my Tumblr page .

...Wean Yourself !!

Little by little, wean yourself.
This is the gist of what I have to say.
From an embryo, whose nourishment comes from blood,
Grow into an infant drinking milk,
To a child who eats solid food,
To a searcher after wisdom,
To a hunter of more invisible game.
Think how it would be to have a conversation with an embryo.
You might say, “The world outside is vast and intricate.
There are wheatfields and mountain passes,
And orchards in bloom.
At night there are millions of galaxies, and in the sunlight,
The beauty of friends dancing at a wedding.”
You might ask the embryo why he, or she, stays cooped up
in the dark with eyes closed.
Listen to the answer.
There is no “other world.”
I only know what I’ve experienced.
You must be hallucinating.

  1. I love the picture he paints. Especially the parts about orchards in bloom and friends dancing at a wedding. The nectar of our lives.
